Adieu, 2010.

Tomorrow is Friday, December 31, 2010, AKA the last reading day of the year.

Running home to finish a Christmas tradition - my annual read of Pride and Prejudice, book number… (and the suspense builds!)

There’s no other book I’d rather spend my last days of 2010 with. Cheers!

The Kindle: The New Man in my Life

Here’s why:

1. Size Matters. 8.7 ounces in weight and a third of an inch in thickness means hunchback begone. It also means more space in my purse for my Pocky.

2. Endurance. One MONTH of battery life off of one charge. Enough said.

3. Easy on the eyes. The use of e-ink technology (vs. traditional backlighting) reduces strain on the eyes and is great for people like me who stare at their computer screens all day long.

4. Teaches me new things. One of my favorite things is Word of the Day (… REALLY) and the hover-over-text dictionary feature on the Kindle is a close runner-up. Learning new words? Always down.

5. We fit together. I like reading under the covers, wearing my Snuggie around the house, baking banana bread and catching up over a cup of hot tea. Basically… homebody activities. And for some reason I feel that my Kindle likes me more because of it.

J’adore.

My First Kindle Purchase

‘Tis the season to be jolly! My bosses got me a new Kindle as a holiday present and I downloaded my first eBook yesterday. It was a tough pick - I wanted something “fun” and current to read on the plane for tomorrow but finally settled on a classic that I’ve been meaning to get to for a while - Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women.

Happy holiday reading!

Smartphone wars

I just got a new Android phone on Saturday and was a perfectly happy and connected little camper until, on a whim, I decided to search for a possible San Francisco Public Library (SFPL) app. I tapped into the Android Market and no dice. No big whoop, such a thing would be too good to exist… or so I thought.

My curiosity (or overly meticulous nature… I prefer curiosity) got the best of me, however, and I immediately clicked open a new tab on my Firefox browser and did a quick Google search on my fantasy app. To my chagrin, there it was for all to see: SFPL Mobile iPhone Application. Oh, bloody hell. Apple, you win again.
